Design Portfolio of Samuel Arnold : Web Design / Print Work / Identity

Services
I'm a designer who works in three main areas: web design, print work and identity.
Below you will find detailed the range of services that I offer, and you can use the links in the left column to jump down to the relevant sections. For more information please don't hesitate to contact me.
I provide a number of web services which includes design and authoring of full-scale websites, bespoke web pages, micro-sites, conceptual design, Flash animation and e-marketing. Below you will find an outline of each service I offer.
→ Brochure Websites
As a graphic and web designer I can produce full-scale websites from scratch, developing initial ideas through to completed sites. I can not only design the graphic look of a site, but code it in standards-compliant HTML and CSS code, and provide Flash authoring (if required) along the way.
In this, the sites I produce entirely myself are generally 'brochure' websites. These are sites where all the ongoing design and maintenance is done by myself, the designer, rather than a Content Management System (for CMS see below). Such a site typically benefits a client who requires periodical updates – ranging from weekly to monthly, or just a few times a year.
These brochure sites act like an online magazine for new visitors and customers to surf through. This is advantageous for small to medium size companies or individuals who want a web presence, but are not updating content on a daily basis.
Such sites have many benefits. The start-up cost of a brochure site is significantly less expensive to produce than a site with a CMS or complex back-end system built in. Additionally, ongoing maintenance costs are lower as you only pay for the updates you require when you need them. Each page is also tailor-made by a designer – the website is maintained to the highest aesthetic standard throughout. In addition this approach lends itself to a higher level of creativity with more advanced design and layout techniques available.

→ Content Management Systems
One of the services I offer is graphic design for web development, which can include content management systems, web applications, databases and e-commerce.
Wire-frames and concept designs are produced and finalised by myself before being out-sourced to a third-party developer*. This can be a client's preferred developer, or a company recommended by myself. In this I can project-manage a site from start to finish, or simply provide the design files for development.
*A 'developer' is an individual or company who writes the complex back-end system of a website. He or she has a role that is distinct from a designer, having skills similar to a software developer or engineer.

→ Micro-Sites
Micro-sites are small-scale websites which often act as a promotional tool, such as supporting the launch of a new book or album. They are often rich in resources, such as sample music tracks, sample chapters, animation and video content.
Often the conceptual designs are taken from the products they are launching. The GodStories and Journey micro-sites are good examples of these. Both are adaptions of the album cover artwork, which gives consistency in the look and feel, and helps keep costs down.

→ Bespoke Web Pages
Sometimes all that is required is a single bespoke web page. As a sole-trader, no job is too small. This can be a single page promoting a small or start-up business, charity or individual. Or it can be a unique page design added to an existing website.
This can be very advantageous for start-up businesses or charities as it provides a professional look and web presence on a tight budget. And sometimes, one page is enough to get you started.

→ Flash Authoring & Animation
Flash has, for many years, been a great animation and authoring tool for websites. With the rise of non-Flash mobile devices such as the iPhone and iPad, Flash compatibility has taken a hit and it's future is a little uncertain. However, it remains unparalleled in providing a rich, highly interactive and animated user experience.
For this reason I still get many requests for Flash authoring and animation. I design banners, adverts, micro-sites and bespoke web pages. All of my current sites that feature Flash components now feature static HTML replacement files. So on non-Flash devices, the user is presented with a stripped-down, compatible version. This approach allows a client to benefit from what Flash has to offer while providing a site that everyone can view.

→ E-Marketing
Part of the web services that I offer is design and authoring for e-marketing – the use of HTML pages delivered via email as a promotional tool. Many people use these as flyers, newsletters, launch pages for micro-sites, websites and e-cards.
I typically use a company called Vertical Response (www.verticalresponse.com) to execute e-newsletter delivery and I design for maximum compatibility and performance. Vertical Response is a great tool with many features, and through them I'm able to offer testing, management of subscriber lists, sign-up forms (which can be integrated into websites) and the service provides detailed email reporting and statistics.

Just about anything that can be printed I have designed at some point in the last decade: booklets, brochures, albums, 50ft banners, business cards, t-shirts, posters, letterheads and flyers. I love print work and have an in-depth knowledge of the print-process to get projects looking great.
Take a look around the print section of my portfolio and you will see examples of many of these. I have compiled a quick list according to type below. If you have further questions or would like a quote, please visit the contact page and get in touch.

Logos are a central part of the design services I offer, in which you can find many examples in the Logo / Branding section of my portfolio.
The design of a logo is very much a process: listening to the client, submitting ideas, receiving feedback and gradually homing-in on a final design. In this process, some clients like to spend more time exploring many ideas and variations on designs, while others prefer to stick to a tighter budget and go through a shorter process.
